Pressmark runs on your Mac. Your drafts, workspace, settings and content folder stay there. We, the makers of Pressmark, do not receive them. Who is responsible, your rights and how to reach us are in the legal notice and the privacy notice on our website (see Legal notice in Help).
Where your data lives#
- Workspace folder. A folder in your Mac's Application Support folder holds Pressmark's database, caches and history.
- Keychain. Secrets, such as a model provider key or an integration token, are stored in the macOS Keychain. They are never written to files or logs.
- Your content folder. Pressmark reads it and never uploads it. It never deletes or changes your posts.
Connections the app makes#
- Substack. When you ask, and on its daily routine, Pressmark reads public Substack pages: your publication's feed, archive, About page and public profile, its public recommendations, the public pages of writers you follow or discover, and the public comments on your posts. Substack receives your IP address, as with any page visit, and its own privacy policy applies. Pressmark reads at the Cautious limits, with fixed pauses between requests. It does not sign in or act on Substack in this version.
- Your AI model provider. Pressmark sends text to the provider you chose and use under your own account, for example the claude command line with your own subscription. The provider processes it under your contract with them; we do not receive it. What is sent: for the morning reading queue, the queued posts (title, author, text cut to about 900 words) and the titles of up to three of your own matching posts; for Engage drafts, the posts you might answer and your recent titles; for the report card, your publication's name, description, About page and recent titles; for Analyse my posts, your posts' titles, subtitles and tags. It never sends your draft texts unless a feature names them here.
- Integrations you connect. Notion, Readwise and other services you connect receive the requests needed to read what you shared with Pressmark, under your own account with them.
- Licence service, once sales open. For sign-in, trials and licence checks we process your email address, your plan and licence status, trial dates, a random installation number the app creates for this Mac, the Mac name you choose, the app version and the time of the last check. Pressmark does not read hardware identifiers from your Mac. Nothing is sent before you start sign-in or enter a licence code.
- Updates, in the Mac app. Only if you allow it: Pressmark asks whether a new version exists, sending the app and macOS versions.
Pressmark has no analytics, no crash reporting and no advertising identifiers. A diagnostics report leaves your Mac only if you copy it and send it yourself.
AI drafts#
Every text an AI model drafted is marked "AI draft" until you change it. Check and edit drafts before you use them: AI can be wrong. Nothing is sent or posted without your approval. If you publish AI-generated text to inform the public on matters of public interest, the EU AI Act (Article 50(4)) may require you to say it was generated by AI, unless a person reviewed or edited it and you hold editorial responsibility for it.
Your own responsibility#
When you use Pressmark to read, rank or answer other writers' posts and profiles, you decide what is processed and you are responsible for it under data protection law, unless your use is purely personal.
Deleting your data#
Deleting the workspace folder in Application Support removes the database and caches. Your content folder is never touched. Secrets stay in the Keychain until you remove them in Keychain Access or disconnect the integration in Pressmark.
