Common questions

Short answers about what Pressmark does, your Substack account, your writing, AI, plans and Macs.

About Pressmark#

Is Pressmark made by Substack?#

No. Pressmark works with Substack, and it is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Substack Inc.

Is Pressmark a bot for Substack?#

No, and it never will be. Pressmark takes the busy work off your hands so you have more time for writing and for real conversations. You decide how much it does, and nothing goes out without you.

What does it actually do?#

It turns the folder where you keep your articles into a release calendar, prepares each post for Substack with checks, previews and a cover, drafts the Notes and LinkedIn post that go with it, and gives you a short daily growth routine: who to follow, what to read and what to reply to. The Getting started article walks through the first setup.

Do I have to change how I write?#

No. Keep your Markdown files, Obsidian vault or Git repo as they are. Pressmark reads the layout you already have. If you are starting fresh, it can create a content folder with templates and instructions for your writing assistant. See the Content folder article.

Your Substack account#

Does Pressmark post for me?#

Only what you approve. Scheduling a post or sending an email always asks you to confirm first. Likes, follows, restacks and replies are suggested, and you accept them one by one or all at once. Messages are always sent by you.

Could this get my Substack account in trouble?#

Pressmark is careful by design. Nothing social is automated, and every action that touches a platform stays within the limits on your Safety page, set to Cautious from the start. See the Safety and the blocklist article.

Does Pressmark store my Substack password?#

No. Your Substack session and any keys stay in your Mac's Keychain. They never leave your Mac and are never sent to us.

Your writing and data#

Is my writing uploaded anywhere?#

No. Pressmark runs on your Mac and reads your files there. If you use AI features, text goes only to the model provider you choose. See the Privacy and your data article.

Does Pressmark change my files?#

No. Pressmark reads your content folder and never changes it.

AI#

How does Pressmark use AI?#

Pressmark drafts comments, replies, Notes and summaries with the AI model you connect and run under your own account, for example the claude command line on your own subscription. Every draft is marked as an AI draft, and nothing is sent or posted without your approval. AI can be wrong, so read before you send.

Which AI does it use?#

Your choice: Claude through your own subscription, an API key from Anthropic or OpenAI, or a local model through Ollama or LM Studio. Planning, previews and scheduling work without any AI.

Can Claude, Codex or Cursor use Pressmark?#

Yes. Create a key on the Access page, choose what it may read, and copy the ready setup into your assistant. Anything irreversible waits for you. See the Assistants and access article.

Plans and Macs#

Is there a free trial?#

Yes: 14 days of everything, no card needed. After that you move to Free, which schedules one post a month, unless you subscribe or buy Pressmark once. Nothing is deleted, and posts already scheduled in Substack still go out.

What does buying once include?#

Pressmark as it is on the day you buy it, yours to keep on two Macs, with no subscription. New versions are not included, and features that rely on Substack can stop working if Substack changes. You can move to Pro at any time. See the Plans and your licence article.

Can I use Pressmark on two Macs?#

Yes. Pro and the one-time purchase each work on two Macs. To move to a new Mac, remove the old one in Settings, Plan.

Which Mac do I need?#

A Mac with macOS 14 Sonoma or later.

How do I cancel?#

In the app, open Settings, Plan, and choose Cancel your subscription. Your plan runs until the end of the period you paid for.
